We wanted to thank each and every one of our members who responded to the questionnaire regarding the smoking ban and tobacco controls sent out with the July issue of BII Business. We had nearly 1,000 replies and the findings made sad reading.

We organised a media event in Westminster on Monday 8th September - the deadline for responses to the Future of Tobacco Control consultation - and we invited people from the Department of Health, the licensed trade, the tobacco industry and the national and trade media. The purpose of the event was to highlight the problems experienced by our members and generate some media interest in your plight.

The event was a huge success with a great turn out, and representatives from each of the stakeholder groups listed above attended. We presented the findings of the survey and then shared many of the individual responses members wrote on their questionnaires so that people heard the views from the front line.

To date, we have seen considerable press coverage resulting from the story, which was distributed to the national, trade and regional press throughout the UK, with mentions appearing in The Times, The Guardian, The Daily Sport, The Publican and The Morning Advertiser, as well as numerous regional papers.

BII's work on this subject will not end there and we will report back from time to time on the highlights of our activity.
