BII names one Honorary Companion and seven Companion
Members at its 2002 AGM
One of the BII’s longest standing members of staff, acting director of marketing and membership, Brian Maughan has been named as an Honorary Companion at the BII’s AGM which took place yesterday (Tuesday May 14, 2002) at London’s Le Meridien Grosvenor House.
Brian has been with the BII since 1990 and in that time was responsible for developing the National Certificate for Licensees and he was instrumental in gaining QCA accreditation for the Institute’s awarding body. Following the departure of Mary Curnock Cook, the BII’s past director, he was acting chief executive until John McNamara joined in January of this year, and Brian’s contribution to the Institute in his current role has been invaluable.
Honorary Companionships are given to people who are not eligible to become full members of the BII as they do not directly own, run or manage licensed retail outlets. They are given as recognition for dedication and commitment to the BII.
Seven other Fellows of the BII were made up to CMBII, again in recognition of their work for the Institute. Three of these are current chairs of BII regions – Rose Cunningham, of the East Midlands region, Dave Stickings of the South East region and Bernard Brindley of the Central region. Treasurer of the Wessex region, Cherry Blakeman, has also been awarded Companion Membership. The remaining three are Martin Grant, treasurer of the BII’s council, and Mike Clayton and Philip Thorley, who are both active council members. …/more over

BII Chairman, Richard Pearson CMBII, who is responsible for choosing Companion Members, said: “All eight of these people have worked tirelessly, often in a voluntary capacity, to support the BII and promulgate the good work it undertakes. It is well deserved recognition in all cases, and particularly for Brian Maughan who was magnificent as Acting Chief Executive prior to John McNamara’s appointment.” ends]
